What is a .dbx file?

Outlook Express is a different application as compared from the Microsoft Office Outlook e-mail client which comes with Microsoft Office for Windows. Outlook Express is bundled with Internet Explorer and uses *.dbx files for storing emails.

Outlook Express stores its e-mail messages in different formats depending on the version.

1. Outlook Express v 4, which shipped with Windows 98, stored messages in *.mbx files.
2. Outlook Express v 5, which shipped with Windows 98SE, switched to *.dbx files, with a separate file for each mailbox folder.
3. Outlook Express v 5.50 shipped with Windows 2000
4. Outlook Express v 5.5 shipped with Windows Me
5. Outlook Express v 6, which is included with Windows XP, also stores messages in *.dbx files.

What is dbt file? How can i recover emails from such files?

dbt files are the temporary file created for dbx files. If for due to any reason Microsoft Outlook Express crashes and you cannot find a required dbx file or recover an important email from the dbx file, then try and locate dbt files on your local hard disk using Windows Search, rename their extensions to .dbx and then recover emails in them using Disk Doctors Outlook Express Email Recovery (.dbx).

What is the store path of Microsoft Outlook Express?

It is useful to know that Outlook Express stores its email files in a location such as the following:

"C:\Documents & Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{SDOCE8ABD-5896-3E3D5}\Microsoft\Outlook Express"

Where 'Administrator' is the user's logon ID and the value in curly-brackets {} is an arbitrary string.

How to locate dbx files on my hard drive?

The default path where outlook stores dbx files is: "C:\Documents & Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{SDOCE8ABD-5896-3E3D5}\Microsoft\Outlook Express"

However, you also can go to "Tools menu and select "Options" and then select "Maintenance" tab, click the button "Store Folder" and copy the path, and paste the same to Windows Explorer to view the files.
